The US constitution begins with the assumption that humans are born free to do anything, with a few exceptions where it interferes with the similar freedom of other humans, and so made laws that explicitly describe what those exceptions are. The way it is written - at least initially - a lay person can easily understand what it says.
The Indian one is the exact opposite - the way it is written you can't do anything that isn't explicitly allowed and people take pride in the fact that it is the lengthiest written one in the world, plus it is pure lawyerese.
All our fundamental rights come with a 'conditions apply' clause.
Right to equality(*) - except for laws pertaining to dowry (498A), rape (men can't be raped, apparently) and reservations in govt jobs and govt run colleges in the name of affirmative action.
Right to freedom(*) - except where it hurts 'public order' or 'decency and morality' (both intentionally vague terms so the govt can restrict it at a whim).
Right against exploitation(*) - except when the government does it, using taxes to buy votes.
Right to freedom of religion(*) - except if you're Hindu, since only temples and Hindu religious institutions are subject to government interference in a supposedly secular country.
Cultural and educational rights(*) - except when it comes to imposing Hindi on the southern states, and only 'minorities' have the right to propagate their own culture(contradicts right to equality right there)
Right to constitutional remedies(*) - except when it comes to removing these very clauses that contradict them.
Cardinal Richelieu is supposed to have said 'give me 5 words written by an honest man and I will find enough to hang him', which applies to the Indian state.
If you ever find yourself on the wrong side of the government, rest assured they will use any one of the myriad laws that you violate by just breathing to throw your ass in jail.
Meanwhile after every incident of government censorship, clueless armchair activists will either go on with wHaT aBoUt fReE sPeEcH or act as though this is a unique and terrible feature of the party in power as of this writing.
